Osteopathy is a hands-on treatment that focuses on the way your muscles, joints, and spine work together. If you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or mobility issues, osteopathy can help get you moving again.
At Waldegrave Clinic, our osteopaths use a combination of gentle manipulation, stretching, and massage to improve movement, relieve tension, and support long-term musculoskeletal health. Whether you’re suffering from back pain, headaches, sports injuries, or general aches and pains, osteopathy helps restore balance to your body.
Every treatment plan is personalised to you, helping not only to ease pain but also to prevent future issues. If you want to move better, feel stronger, and improve your overall wellbeing, osteopathy is a great place to start.
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
Treatment helps to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, enhance blood supply to the tissues, and thereby helping the body to heal.
Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
Osteopathy may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including muscle and joint aches, pains and stiffness, nerve pain such as sciatica, headaches and sport/activity related pain and injury. Osteopathy care is suitable for nearly all ages, from young children to the elderly.
You will usually be asked questions about your medical history and lifestyle, as well as any symptoms you may be experiencing. You will be examined in the area(s) of your body causing discomfort. Sometimes the cause of the problem may be in a different area to the pain, (for example, pain in your lower arm may be linked to the nerves in your neck) so your whole body may be examined.
Your osteopath will need to feel for any tightness in the muscles and stiffness in the joints and may need to touch these areas to identify problems. This comprehensive analysis means that you will be given a clear understanding of the cause of your particular problem and the level of treatment required.
All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), and will have completed a degree in osteopathy.
