Hayfever – what you need to know

Hay FeverSpring and summer are a wonderful time of year;  light nights, beautiful displays of colour, birds singing and the weather finally warms up.

But it is also Hay Fever season.

Hay Fever is an allergic reaction to the inhaled pollen from trees, flowers and grasses – and is not a lot of fun for sufferers.

The most common Hay Fever symptoms:

  • Runny nose
  • Red and itchy eyes
  • Scratchy throat
  • Sneezing

Wheezing and shortness of breath can also occur. And almost all sufferers have generalised feelings of fatigue.

How long do the symptoms last for?

Symptoms can last just for a short spring season. But reactions can also continue through the summer with a sensitivity to the flower pollens, and into the autumn with the grasses, moulds and spores.

For longer term sufferers the condition may not just be Hay Fever.

If symptoms persist throughout the year, you may also be sensitive to other factors such as house dust mites or pet hair – a condition known as Perennial rhinitis.

Effective treatments for Hay Fever

During the high pollen season it is recommended to keep doors and windows closed.  Also, refrain from drying clothes outside as they may attract the pollen.

Whilst there is no cure for Hay Fever there are many over the counter remedies and prescriptive drugs available to help relieve the symptoms. Be cautious that these may sometimes leave you feeling drowsy.

Homeopathy  is  a natural holistic therapy that may also be considered – it uses the principles of nature to help stimulate the body’s natural healing powers that may ease Hay Fever symptoms.

If you are suffering with Hay Fever and are unsure what treatment to try, do consider consulting with a pharmacist or your GP.
